I just spent a weekend in Clayton, New Mexico, which was an eye opener in terms of the economic realities facing small towns everywhere. It's historically been a ranching town, but I don't think there's a theoretical limit to how few ranchers America needs to supply its beef habit -- ranches can consolidate and ranching, like many other industries, can be outsourced to foreign countries. So what's Clayton's best shot at not becoming a ghost town? Well, it's on a nice road.
